Trade and Environment Briefings: Sustainable Fisheries - Policy Brief 4
United Nations Environment Programme, International Trade Center (ITC), International Center for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD)

Fish and fishery products represent one of the most extensively traded commodities in the world. Trade is especially strong among developing countries, which produce nearly three times as much fish as developed countries. However, their future trade and development possibilities in this sector have been jeopardised by over-exploitation and the effects of climate change, which have severely stressed global fish stocks. The adoption of green fishing practices, reforming distorting subsidies and eliminating trade barriers, are needed to ensure the long-term viability of the fisheries trade. This would allow developing countries to exploit the full potential of the sector to spur domestic social development while transitioning to a green economy.

Sustainable Food Systems and Food Security: Enhancing Food Security Through Sustainable Food Systems - SDG Policy Brief No. 006 April 2019
United Nations Environment Programme

Food loss and waste occurs along the entire food chain. Food loss is the decrease in quantity or quality of food, while food waste refers to discarding or non-food use of food set for human consumption. Unsustainable farming, storage and distribution processes, lack of consumer awareness coupled with environmental factors such as climate change and natural disasters continue to escalate the challenges on food security. Food loss and waste represents a significant inefficiency in the world’s current food system and taking action to reduce it can conserve the environment, decrease greenhouse gas emissions and promote efficient land and water use.

Managing Watersheds for Urban Resilience: Policy Brief
United Nations Environment Programme, Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction

This policy brief is intended to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable watershed management for resilient urban planning, and to provide recommendations on how city and municipal governments can effectively utilize a watershed management approach for urban risk reduction. The policy brief aims to contribute towards the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) Global Campaign “Making Cities Resilient” and strategic outcomes of the 2011 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. Through four different case studies this brief demonstrates how ecosystem-based approaches in watershed management can provide complementary solutions to help achieve urban development goals, as well as protect people and development investments against water-related disasters and climate change.
