This report provides the first global maps of cloud forests, a regional analysis of the threats facing these forests and information on their biodiversity and watershed importance. Cloud Forest Agenda was compiled by the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) as a product of the Mountain Cloud Forest Initiative, which is a partnership between UNEP-WCMC, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme and International Hydrological Programme (IHP), and the Commission on Ecosystem Management of the IUCN-The World Conservation Union.

Globally, people are becoming increasingly aware of the degradation of the world's water bodies. The need for a holistic assessment of transboundary waters in order to respond to growing public concern and provide advice to governments and decision makers regarding management of aquatic resources has been recognised by several international bodies focusing on global environment. To compile a global overview, the Global International Water Assessment (GIWA) has been implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in conjunction with the University of Kalmar, Sweden (www.giwa.net).
