Guidance Note: Mainstreaming Poverty-Environment Linkages into National Development Planning
United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Development Programme

Experience continues to show that better environmental management can contribute greatly to improving health, resilience to environmental risks, economic development and livelihood opportunities, especially for the poor. To fight poverty and preserve the ecosystems poor people rely on, we must place pro-poor economic growth and environmental sustainability at the heart of our most fundamental policies, systems and institutions. This approach has come to be known as poverty-environment mainstreaming. It essentially aims to integrate the linkages between the environment and poverty reduction into government processes and institutions,
thereby changing the very nature of its decision-making culture and practices.

Mine Rehabilitation for Environment and Health Protection - A Training Manual
United Nations Environment Programme, World Health Organization

This manual has been prepared jointly by the United Nations Environment Programme, Industry and Environment (UNEP JE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). It complements an earlier trainer's package on Environmental Management of Mine Sites (UNEP lIE Technical Report No. 30). The earlier report introduced in a general way some of the key environmental issues relating to mines. This present manual covers one of these in a more comprehensive manner - that of site rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is the aspect most easily perceived by regulators and the public as being deficient in mining operations. It is important that companies put emphasis on this aspect, and this in turn needs competent, trained personnel.

Environmental Guidelines for Afforestation Projects - UNEP Environmental Management Guidelines No. 9
United Nations Environment Programme

The environmental operational guidelines in this series are presented in the belief that dynamics and change induced by development aims are not without environmental hazards and risks. It is necessary to identify such hazards and risks where they arise and take early steps, in so far as circumstances permit, to contain or reduce them. It is necessary to take early steps, because later attempts at remedial action may be illusory, more costly than preventive action taken at the outset, and, in some cases, may be so costly as to bring into question the overall economic viability of the project.
