Microbial Degradation of Xenobiotics - Practical Manual

The present manual is conceived as the training component of the project Microbial Technologies for Degradation of Persistent Pollutants" in order to allow the firsthand acquaintance and acquisition of certain practical skills in modern microbial techniques aimed at abating environmental levels of persistent pollutants. It embraces a follow-up set of laboratory exercises to a lecture course treating similar topics that focus on: methods of extraction of persistent pollutants from soil and their qualitative and quantitative analyses; establishment of the structure of xenobiotics and the products of their microbial bioconversion; description of techniques used for screening and isolation of active natural microbial strains, and genetic engineering of microorganisms with enhanced capabilities of degrading persistent politants; special attention is paid to the use of active strains for the cleanup of industrial sewage with due regard to the stability of utilized strains under selective and non-selective conditions.

Integrated Assessment of trade-related policies, with a focus on the agricultural sector, undertaken over the last ten years in a large number of countries.

These technical guidelines are principally meant to provide guidance to countries who are building their capacity to manage waste in an environmentally sound and efficient way and in their development of detailed procedures or waste management plan or strategy. They concern waste generated nationally and disposed of at the national level as well as waste imported as a result of a transboundary movement, or arising from the treatment of imported wastes.

Handbook of Environmental Law

This Handbook is intended to be a handy reference book of up-to-date information on environmental law. It provides a source of quick and easy reference for governments, institutions, NGOs and the public needing to use basic environmental law texts in the course of their daily work. It brings together key policy documents, texts of major legal instruments in the field of environmental law and sustainable development as well as basic texts in the field of international law, indispensable for carrying out work in environmental law. It is divided thematically into four parts.
Part One is entitled UNEP's Environmental Law Programme. It contains the texts of the documents which deal with UNEP's programme in environmental law and institutions. These are grouped in two sections. Section 1, UNEP's Legislative Authority in Environmental Law, contains those documents which set out UNEP's authority to take action in the field of environmental law. These are relevant General Assembly Resolutions, UNEP Governing Council Decisions and relevant extracts from Agenda 21. Section 2, UNEP's Activities in Environmental Law 1993-1995, discusses UNEP's current and on-going activities in respect of international legal instruments, national legislation and institutions, training, education and information, and policy statements.

Montreal Protocol on the Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer: UNEP Handbook on Essential Use Nominations

The Handbook describes the nomination process for essential use exemptions as it has evolved through Articles of the Protocol and decisions of the Parties; the procedures followed under the Protocol; and the experience of the Panel and its Technical Options Committees in managing the process to date. The Handbook contains three Sections: a review of the essential use process; instructions for the completion of essential use nominations; and appendices. The appendices contain provisions of the Montreal Protocol, decisions of the Parties to the Protocol and excerpts from reports of the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel which are relevant to the essential use process. An essential use nomination form is also included.

Quick Start Guide for managing mercury trade in artisanal and small scale gold mining

This guide for managing mercury trade in ASGM has been developed as part of UN Environment Global Mercury Partnership technical support to countries developing NAPs, in response to requests from countries. The guide provides an overview of the current state of knowledge on mercury supply, demand and trade. Furthermore, it aims to familiarize the reader with the provisions relevant to mercury trade in the Minamata Convention. Finally, it suggests practical steps to understand mercury trade at the national level and recommends approaches to developing the National Action Plan strategy to manage mercury trade in ASGM.

Handbook for the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer - Third Edition

This third edition of the Montreal Protocol Handbook updates the previous 1992 edition with the inclusion of the decisions of the Fourth Meeting in Copenhagen in November 1992. It incorporates into the Protocol the adjustments and the Amendment adopted at that meeting. It also annexes
some important recent decisions of the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund.
