Smoke-haze: A Transboundary Air Pollution Issue in Southeast Asia - Foresight Brief No. 007 - March 2018
United Nations Environment Programme

The importance of this issue lies in the fact that smoke haze pollution has been occurring for several decades in Southeast Asia and with each passing year the pollution gets worse and lasts longer (Lin et al 2017). While the haze in 2015 was the longest on record (Tan 2015) the pollution standards index (PSI) data from Singapore has exhibited increasingly higher peaks. The longer the issue goes unaddressed, the greater the public and environmental health impacts and economic costs become. Furthermore, it risks straining relations between the countries within the ASEAN region.

Emissions Gap Report 2018
United Nations Environment Programme

This 9th edition of the Emissions Gap Report assesses the latest scientific studies on current and estimated future greenhouse gas emissions and compares these with the emission levels permissible for the world to progress on a least-cost pathway to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. This difference between “where we are likely to be and where we need to be” is known as the ‘emissions gap’. As in previous years, the report explores some of the most important options available for countries to bridge the gap. This report has been prepared by an international team of leading scientists, assessing all available information, including that published in the context of the IPCC Special Report, as well as in other recent scientific studies. This year’s report presents the newest assessment of the emissions gap in 2030 between emission levels under full implementation of the unconditional and conditional NDCs and those consistent with least-cost pathways to stay below 2°C and 1.5°C respectively.

Alternatives for the Use of Glyphosate - Foresight Brief No. 010 October 2018
United Nations Environment Programme

Glyphosate is the most widely applied herbicide in agriculture and is often used in conjunction with crops that are genetically modified. Farmers’ dependency on glyphosate has grown steeply in recent years as it is easy to apply and relatively inexpensive. However, glyphosate is also increasingly controversial, with accumulating evidence that it can lead to a wide range of health and environmental impacts. Two countries have already banned glyphosate and others are considering to do the same. This Foresight Brief shows that there are alternative methods which can help to avoid the use of glyphosate as well as other harmful chemicals to kill weeds. The alternative methods offer the benefits of restoring soil fertility and increasing biodiversity in the environment.
