Pacific Islands: GIWA regional assessment
United Nations Environment Programme

This report presents the GIWA assessment of the Pacific Islands region, which comprises more than 20 Island nations or territories that exhibit enormous geomorphological, climatic, cultural and demographic diversity within a vast ocean expanse. The region is unique because its inhabitants, who have close links with, and great cultural, economic and spiritual dependence on, their terrestrial and marine environment, are often the owners and users of these resources and ultimately govern their conservation and sustainable use. In addition to highlighting the overexploitation of fish and other living resources in densely populated areas, this report emphasises the vulnerability of many of these small Island states to the impacts of climate change, particularly sea level rise and fluctuations in rainfall, which has enormous influence on the availability of freshwater in the region. The root causes of overexploitation and freshwater shortage are illustrated using several case studies and potential policy options and mitigate these problems in the future are discussed.

Leveraging expertise of civil society in developing countries: communication programme of methyl bromide synthesis report 2004
United Nations Environment Programme

This publication presents the saga of the unique efforts of these NGOs from developing countries. Methyl bromide, a soil fumigant, was included as a controlled substance under the Montreal Protocol in 1997 when for the first time that the agricultural community became engaged in implementation of the Montreal Protocol. At this turning point in the history of Montreal Protocol, OzonAction developed an innovative mechanism to engage NGOs in developing countries that had hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture. Under the Multilateral Fund, OzonAction provided financial assistance and technical guidance to 13 NGOs from as many countries to spark actions to eliminate methyl bromide.

Korea Environmental Policy Bulletin - Environmental Policies for Fuel Switching
Republic of Korea, Ministry of Environment

Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas have been indispensable commodities for the economy since long ago. Electricity, which is essential to daily life, is mostly generated from these fossil fuels. Fuels for automobiles such as gasoline, diesel oil and gas are also fossil fuels. Steam and heat required for industrial activities are also largely produced from these fossil fuels. In fact, large part of all energy sources, that are crucial to economic activities in households, transportation and industry, comes from fossil fuels. However, among various fossil fuels, coal and oil are basically composed of carbon and contain a large quantity of impurities. Therefore, no matter how high their combustion efficiency may be, air pollutants, including particulate matters(PM), sulfur dioxide(SO2) and nitrogen dioxide(NO2), and global warming substances such as carbon dioxide(CO2) are emitted during the process of combustion. On the other hand, although such gases like liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are fossil fuels, their components are different from those of oil and coal and their contents of impurities are lower. Naturally, in the process of combustion, they emit much less air pollutants and global warming substances than coal and oil. Korea has achieved rapid economic growth since the 1970s, mainly driven by heavy and chemical industries. However, because the nation primarily relied on coal and oil as its energy sources, it suffered from air pollution triggered by SO2 and PM.

Analyzing Environmental Trends using Satellite Data: Selected Cases
United Nations Environment Programme

An analysis of recent and historical satellite imagery collected over the past forty years was carried out for Lake chad in West Africa, the Sundarbans along the India-Bangladesh border, Papua in Indonesia, the Paranaense Forest around Itaipu Dam and Iguazu Falls at the juncture of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, and the Ataturk Dam and the Harran Plain in South Eastern Turkey to provide scientific evidence of environmental change taking place in these ecologically significant regions of the world. While it can be difficult to pinpoint exact causes of change to the environment, the report documents environmental impacts of development, tourism, globalisation, human uses, engineering, climate change and a host of other factors.
