Biodiversity is in crisis. There is well-established evidence indicating an irrevocable and continuing decline of genetic and species diversity, and degradation of ecosystems at local and global scales. Scientists are increasingly concerned that, if anthropogenic pressures on Biodiversity continue unabated, we risk precipitating a sixth mass extinction event in Earth history, with profound impacts on human health and equity.

Global Linkages: A Graphic Look at the Changing Arctic

The new report “Global Linkages – A graphic look at the changing Arctic”, produced by UN Environment and its collaborating center GRID-Arendal, is a set of maps and graphics, accompanied by short narratives to synthesize and illustrate the most critical, connected environmental challenges with Arctic and global relevance and focusing on issues which call for common solutions. The graphics builds on Arctic and global environmental assessments and reflect the dynamic connection between the Arctic and the rest of the planet. It presents both trends and outlooks and provides actionable recommendations focused on policy development and options for solutions. The issues covered by this product reflect the themes of the current Finnish Chairmanship of the Arctic Council – climate change, biodiversity conservation and pollution prevention.

The assessment urges the world’s decision makers and all citizens to apply the principles of sustainable development to help ensure that Earth’s environment remains the foundation of society and of people’s well-being and resilience.

Cross-cutting Issues - Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6): Healthy Planet, Healthy People Chapter 4

As understanding of the interdependence between a healthy planet and healthy people becomes more developed, complex issues that thread through systems and societies gain new importance. Beyond the traditional Global Environment Outlook (GEO) themes addressing air, biodiversity, oceans, land and fresh water, this GEO-6 assessment addresses cross-cutting issues worthy of further examination. Using
a systems approach, these cross-cutting issues offerentry points allowing another dimension for analysing GEO-6 themes as well as understanding the network of interconnections throughout earth and human systems.

GEO Matters June 2018

GEO Matters is a monthly newsletter that provides updates on GEO processes and activities.

The upcoming GEO-6, expecting to be launched in 2019, will build upon regional assessment processes and create a comprehensive picture of the environmental factors contributing to human well-being, accompanied by an analysis of policies leading to greater attainment of global environmental objectives and goals. The Global Environment Outlook (GEO) is a consultative process, participatory process that builds capacity for conducting integrated environmental assessments and reporting on the state, trends and outlooks of the environment. GEO is also a series of products that informs environmental decision-making and aims to facilitate the interaction between science and policy.

GEO-6 Key Messages

As an outcome of the negotiation meeting of the summary for policymakers of the sixth Global Environment Outlook, held in Nairobi from 21 to 24 January 2019, the Bureau of the meeting was requested to finalize a “key messages” document that would
explain concisely to ministers and other senior decision makers the key messages that emerged from the main assessment report. The Bureau therefore requested input on the draft version of the key messages document from all Member States present at the negotiation meeting and also requested comments thereon from the High-level Intergovernmental and Stakeholder Advisory Group and the Co-Chairs of the GEO-6 assessment

Systemic Policy Approaches for Cross-cutting Issues - Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6): Healthy Planet, Healthy People Chapter 17

This chapter evaluates the capacity of environmental policies to achieve transformational change in addressing cross-cutting global sustainable development challenges. To this end, the chapter addresses the major challenges of adapting socioeconomic systems to climate change, creating a sustainable agricultural and food production system, decarbonizing energy systems, and creating a circular economy.
