International Conference on Water and the Environment: Development Issues for the 2lst century

The International Conference on Water and the Environment (IGWE) was held In Dublin, Ireland, from 26 to 31 January 1992. ICWE provided the major input on freshwater problems to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), convened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 1992. It was also the most significant global conference on water since the United Nations Water Conference held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, In 1977. GEMS/Water Report of the RAISON/GEMS Software Expert Review Meeting - GEMS Reports Series No. 14

RAISON/GEMS is a PC-based software package, developed by Environment Canada, for the UNEP/WHO/WMO[UNESCO GEMS/Water quality monitoring programme, to support national and international water quality data handling and analysis activities. The Global Water Quality Monitoring Project (GEMS/WATER) was the first programme of its kind to address global issues of water quality through a network of monitoring stations in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and groundwaters on all continents. Through technical cooperation with developing countries, the programme has contributed to the establishment and expansion of national water quality monitoring systems in many countries. The objective of the expert review was to examine the utility of the RAISON/GEMS software package for the GEMS/WATER programme, not to examine the whole range of packages available. The basis of the review included: technical capabilities; compatibility with the global database; cost; degree of user-friendliness and ease of operation; long-term software support - e.g. continuing development activities at NWRI and the commitment of the Canadian Government; capability of the package to import maps from external 015 sources; production in different languages; and continuing development of the system beyond the present RAISON/GEMS package. The review of the software took the form of training/demonstrations combined with hands-on applications by the experts. Representatives from China and Mexico reviewed their experience with RAISON/GEMS.

UNEP-HEM / WHO / GEMS/AIR Workshops on Sampler Methodologies in Air Quality Monitoring: Availability, Applicability, and QA/QC Implications - I. Gaseous Species, II. Suspended Particulate Matter - UNEP/GEMS Report Series No.27

In 1974 the World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) jointly established a programme, known as GEMS/AIR, to monitor and assess urban air quality on a global scale. GEMS/AIR is a component of the United Nations Global Environment Monitoring System. GEMS/AIR is now being re-oriented with the new objective of providing the comprehensive information needed for rational air quality management. The programme will expand its geographical coverage, with an emphasis on developing countries, improve data quality, increase its use of other data (meteorological, traffic statistics, production statistics, etc.), and increase the use of data from other sources. The newly formulated objectives of GEMS/AIR are designed to help cities to obtain and interpret the information needed for developing abatement strategies. Strictly defined and implemented quality assurance and quality control procedures will play a central role in ensuring the comparability and compatibility of data obtained in the network. These proposals were endorsed during a meeting of Government-designated experts held in Geneva in November 1991.
