Reports and Books, Resolutions, Decisions and Outcome Documents Programme for Change: Decisions from the Fourth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity
The fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-4) saw the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) move from its start-up phase to a long-term planning cycle. Attended by over 1,300 participants from 152 countries, the Bratislava meeting completed a heavy work schedule and adopted 19 decisions. These decisions will guide the work of the Parties and the secretariat until COP-S (to be held in May 2000) and beyond. Several decisions addressed the ecosystem programmes being developed under the Convention.

Reports and Books African Industrial Workshop: Africa—Regional Industrial Review
Industrial activity is a major contributor to many of the environmental and social problems facing society today. Industrial activity has, however, the potential to make an important contribution to achieving a sustainable society. It has been recognized that a key determinant of success for sustainable development is the linking of trade and environment. Rapid globalization, initiated in part by advances in communications technology, has facilitated the integration of national systems of production and finance, resulting in the growth of cross-border flows of goods, services and capital. Concepts and systems of manufacture have rapidly changed. This has had both negative and positive consequences for sustainability and has led to disagreements between developed and developing countries and within countries themselves. There are increased tensions between trade and environmental policies and issues. Environmental issues are becoming globalized, and it is now well recognized that many actions and impacts in one region have global impacts. As a result, environmental issues are increasingly becoming part of trade issues.

Meeting reports and proceedings, Reports and Books Animal Genetic Resources Conservation by Management, Data banks and Training - Proceedings of the Joint FAO/UNEP Expert Panel Meeting, October 1983 Part 1 - FAO Animal Production and Health Paper 44/1
In 1983, FAQ and UNEP created an Expert Panel of 36eminent scientists to advise on Animal Genetic Resources Conservation and Manage- ment. The first meeting was held in Rome in October 1983, at which work in progress was evaluated, and recommendations made for the next few years. The meeting addressed 4 topics: i) Conservation by management; ii) Animal genetic resources data banks; iii) Training methods in animal genetic resources; and iv) Cryogenic storage of germplasm and genetic engineering.
The Proceedings of the meeting, with the full texts of the working papers presented and subsequently amended by the authors, are now published in two parts. This is Part 1 and contains the papers presented in the first three topic areas. Part 2 contains the papers in the section on Cryogenic storage of germplasm and genetic engineering.

Reports and Books No Net Loss of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services: Applying the Mitigation Hierarchy and Biodiversity Offsets as tools to achieve sustainable development in the WIO - Session 9: From Science to Policy Paper 1
The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) is one of the richest regions of the world for biodiversity. It comprises diverse ecosystems both in terms of biodiversity and the ecosystem services provided, as is the case of coral reefs and mangroves. These areas are important for both wildlife and human populations; offering breeding and foraging areas for flagship marine and migratory species and providing protection for communities and property against storms, sea level rise and coastal erosion. The coastal population of the region is largely dependent on the health and productivity of these and other ecosystems through fishing, coastal agriculture, and tourism.

Discussion and Working documents, Reports and Books Conservation and Management of Chondrichthyans (sharks, rays and chimaeras) in the Western Indian Ocean - Session 8: From Science to Policy Paper 1
The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) has been identified as a global hotspot for chondrichthyan diversity, with 130 shark, 86 batoid (wedgefishes, skates and rays) and 11 chimaera species identified to date. The WIO is one of four global hotspots for chondrichthyan evolutionary distinctiveness, giving the region’s chondrichthyans a high irreplaceability index, and highlighting the need for their conservation.
