In accordance with its Memorandum of Understanding5, GCOS prepares regular reports on the status of the global climate observing system followed by implementation plans that address issues and gaps, and new developments and user needs. These reports are 6 submitted to the WMO and UNFCCC Subsidiary Body on Science and Technology (SBSTA) . In the 2016 GCOS Implementation Plan7, endorsed by the WMO8 and UNFCCC9, the review and updating of ECV requirements is addressed by actions G10-13. Chapter 2 outlines the general process.

At its tenth meeting (Geneva, 23 November 2019), the Advisory Group of the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership (PAG) requested the Secretariat of the Partnership to convene targeted discussions with interested partners and stakeholders on the issue of mercury from oil and gas, which it had identified as cross-cutting, i.e. where the collaboration of Partnership areas of work would facilitate the development of needed information, interventions and projects.
In response to this request, expert consultations were launched on 23 April 2020, with the overall objective to identify potential useful contributions from the Partnership, within the context of its mission and its existing areas of work.

The Steering Committee on the Future of GEO met at its fifth virtual call to discuss progress and plan next steps for the future advancement of the process. Agenda items included:
• Review the procurement process for the options paper on the Future of GEO
• Discuss the different options for conducting broad consultations on the options paper considering pros, cons, budget situation and carbon emissions, then decide on the preferred option
• Discuss the planned Steering Committee facilitated workshops and consultation options

The third meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Bamako Convention on the Ban of the Import into Africa and the Control of Transboundary Movement and Management of Hazardous Wastes within Africa, organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) under the theme “From decisions to action: working for Africa with a safe chemicals and waste future”, was held
in Brazzaville from 12 to 14 February 2020 and was hosted by the Government of the Congo. The three-day meeting began with a two-day expert segment on 12 and 13 February, followed by a ministerial segment on 14 February.

The Steering Committee on the Future of GEO met at its eighth virtual call to discuss progress and
plan next steps for the future advancement of the process. Agenda items included:
• Introduce and discuss the proposed updated plans for the consultations and preparation of
the options document on the future of the GEO process. This included; modalities for
submission of the options document and associated recommendations by the Steering
Committee to UNEA-5 and Plans for Virtual Consultations on the draft ‘options paper on the
future of GEO’
• Update the Steering Committee on the progress made on the preparation of the options
document on the future of the GEO process after the first workshop of the Steering
Committee
• Discuss the detailed Workplan prepared by the Consultancy team on the preparation of the
Options Paper
• Discuss the way forward on the future planning calls and interaction of the Steering
Committee members with the consultancy team and the Secretariat
