The objectives of this international symposium were to: • Seek consensus on priority environmental assessment and sustainable development issues and the core data sets needed to respond to these issues; • Defme the minimum characteristics of these data in relation to national and transnational purposes; • Establish collaborative mechanisms to foster the harmonization of core environmental data; and • Examine the barriers to general access and use of these dataTo identify and agree on consistent, core data sets needed to support policy and decision making for economic development, environmental planning, resource management, and ecological and social understanding on national, regional, and global levels.

Meeting reports and proceedings Environment Information Systems Development in the SADC Region
This is a report of a workshop on: Facilitating the Development of Environmental Information Systems (EIS) in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Region". This workshop, which was the third in a series of regional workshops on Environmental Information Systems (EIS), was held in Gaborone, Botswana from 20th to 23rd June 1995. The Gabarone workshop was a follow up on two previous ones held in 1992 and 1994 in Harare to address strategies for promoting the development of EIS in the SADC region.
The report presents a summary of the workshop presentations and highlights the state of E1S development in the various SADC member states and SADC regional programs represented at the workshop with respect to: goal and purpose of EIS programmes; technical set-up of the programs; training, data sources and quality; national awareness; product generation and distribution; current and expected impact of ETS programs; problems encountered and possible solutions.

The purpose of the workshop was to provide a practical introduction to how economic principles and tools could be used to improve the environmental sustainability of water use. The workshop was aimed at water and environmental managers and policymakers, with the objective being that participants would return to their countries and promote the use of economic principles and tools. That is, the workshop was not designed to teach participants the details of how to design and apply economic tools but rather to indicate their benefits.
