United Nations Environment Programme

Through this paper, Development strategies of selected Latin American and Caribbean countries and the green economy approach: A comparative analysis, UNEP aims to set the foundation for a post-Rio+20 regional debate on the potential of a green economy transition to sustainable development. The present study focuses on six countries that have expressed major concerns about the concept of green economy, namely: Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Venezuela. All countries, except Argentina, are members of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA).
The specific objective of the study is two-fold: to compare predominant elements of the development strategies of these countries with the green economy approach as defined by UNEP; and to analyse the concerns expressed with regard to the adoption of a green economy as a pathway towards sustainable development.

Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2020
United Nations Environment Programme, Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, BloombergNEF

This report analyzes 2019 investment trends, and clean energy commitments made by countries and corporations for the next decade.
It finds commitments equivalent to 826 GW of new non-hydro renewable power capacity, at a likely cost of around USD 1 trillion, by 2030 (1GW is similar to the capacity of a nuclear reactor). Getting on track to limiting global temperature rise to under 2 degrees Celsius – the main goal of the Paris Agreement – would require the addition of around 3,000GW by 2030, the exact amount depending on the technology mix chosen. The planned investments also fall far below the USD 2.7 trillion committed to renewables during the last decade.

This report focuses on water quality and its relation to development objectives such as health, food security and water security. To make this connection, the report reviews important water quality problems in surface waters including pathogen pollution, organic pollution, salinity pollution and eutrophication. The focus is on three continents: Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
