UNEP in the Regions: Europe - Environment for Development
United Nations Environment Programme

UNEP views its role in Europe as being that of a facilitator and supporter of regional and sub-regional cooperation and partnerships, a provider of assessments and early warnings, an advisor on responses to emerging environmental issues, a builder of capacity in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and a provider of outreach, environmental education and public information services. Consistent with this view and with due regard to the changing political landscape of Europe, notably the growing role and influence of the EU both at regional and global levels UNEP's Regional Office for Europe (ROE) in Geneva will firstly continue to support and promote the European inputs to global environmental policies and discussions, including the pan-European preparations for UNEP's Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GMEF), the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Forest Damage in Central European Mountains: Final Report of a Large Area Experiment for Forest Damage Monitoring in Europe Using Satellite Remote Sensing
United Nations Environment Programme

The necessity to perform forest damage inventories arose with the occurrence of the first forest decline symptoms in large areas. The individual countries, participating in the LAOE, started from the beginning with research work and the establishment of damage assessment methods. These traditional methods are based on terrestrial sample surveys and partly accompanied by the interpretation of aerial photography. The approaches
of the inventories, the area coverage and most of all the definition of damage classes varies widely among the countries. Despite of the immense costs and the lacks in providing maps, the biggest deficit is the inability to compare the results of these different damage assessments.
