Cleaner Production: A Guide to Sources of Information
United Nations Environment Programme

Obtaining information on cleaner production can be a challenging task of sifting through the seemingly endless amount of resources that are constantly changing. Not only is new information being made available every day, but the terminology used to describe cleaner production and preventive environmental activities is evolving. Terms such as pollution prevention, waste minimization, green productivity, source reduction, eco-efficiency and clean technologies are also used to refer to the Cleaner Production concept. Hence, searching available information can be a lengthy process.

This is why, as part of its Cleaner Production Programme, UNEP IE has decided to publish this booklet, which presents a number of information sources that can be of assistance in obtaining further information about cleaner production.

Environmental and Safety Incidents concerning Tailings Dams at Mines: Results of a Survey for the Years 1980-1996
United Nations Environment Programme

This study aims to identify and to annotate major incidents involving mine tailings dams since 1980. Although mining in some form takes place in almost every country, it was not feasible, within the time constraints of the study schedule, to investigate every country with a mining industry of a sufficient size to require major tailings dams. The emphasis has therefore been on researching as completely as possible the occurrence of incidents in a cross-section of countries, including major minerals producers and other states in which mining is also important but is of lower economic significance.

The Global Climate System: Climate System Monitoring December 1988-May 1991
United Nations Environment Programme, World Meteorological Organization, World Climate Data and Monitoring Programme

This report, the fourth biennial review of THE GLOBAL CLIMATE SYSTEM, is based on the current scientific understanding of the climate system and provide.s a basis for the monitoring of global change. This monitoring supports efforts such as the newly formed Climate Change Detection Project of the WCDMP by facilitating the identification of persistent anomalies on both global and regional scales, which is a necessary first step toward separating the "signal" of climate change from the "noise" of natural variability. Due to deficiencies in the global observing system, the diagnostic analyses of cause-effect relationships are preliminary for some regions and some climatic events or processes.
