Obura, David, Gudka, Mishal, Rabi, Fouad Abdou, Gian, Suraj Bacha, Bijoux, Jude, Freed, Sarah, Maharavo, Jean, Mwaura, Jelvas, Porter, Sean, Sola, Erwan, Wickel, Julien, Yahya, Saleh, Ahamada, Said

This report presents the latest compilation and quantitative assessment of data on coral reef health by the regional monitoring networks in the WIO, adding to the global GCRMN reports published from 1999 to 2008. The main objective of this report is to provide updated information on the status of coral reefs in the region, up to and including the impact of the 2016 third global coral bleaching event. Secondary objectives are to a) illustrate broad patterns that explain the differing health status of various reefs, and the prospects for reef management in relation to this, and b) present regional drivers of change and how they may evolve in coming years, to help countries in planning for impacts and recovery of coral reefs. It is a joint output of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), the Indian Ocean Commission, Coastal Oceans Research and Development in the Indian Ocean (CORDIO), the United Nations Environment’s Nairobi Convention Coral Reef Task Force and the International Union for the Conservatoin of Nature Species Survival Commission’s (IUCNSSC) Coral Specialist Group.

The Emissions Gap Report 2016: A UNEP Synthesis Report
United Nations Environment Programme

In line with previous reports, the objective of the 2016 Emissions Gap Report is to provide an up-to-date scientific assessment of the global progress towards the emissions reductions required to be on track to meet the long-term goal of the UNFCCC. In particular, this year the report emphasizes the implications of the Paris Agreement’s strengthened goal of holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for immediate and longer-term mitigation action.

The global innovative index 2016: Winning with global innovation
Johnson Cornell University

Innovation is now widely recognized as a central driver of economic growth and development. The Global Innovation Index (GII) aims to capture the multi-dimensional facets of innovation by providing a rich database of detailed metrics for 128 economies, which represent 92.8% of the world’s population and 97.9% of global GDP. As UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted at the UN Economic and Social Council in 2013, the GII is a ‘unique tool for refining innovation policies… for providing an accurate picture on the role of science, technology and innovation in sustainable development’. Since the first edition of the GII, science and innovation have become more open, collaborative, and geographically dispersed. As the quest for innovative solutions expands, the likelihood of technological breakthroughs or affordable innovations—in areas as varied as health and the environment—increases. Yet innovation has sometimes not been portrayed as a global win-win proposition. On the contrary, most metrics and policies are designed at and for the national level. The analysis in this year’s edition, The Global Innovation Index 2016: Winning with Global Innovation, is dedicated to this theme, paving the way for improved policy making that takes into account today’s potential for collaborative global innovation.

OECD-FAO Agricultural outlook 2016-2025
OECD/Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

The twelfth joint edition of the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook provides market projections to 2025 for major agricultural commodities, biofuels and fish. The 2016 report contains a special feature on the prospects for, and challenges facing, Sub-Saharan Africa. Over the ten year Outlook period slowing demand growth will be matched by efficiency gains in production, implying relatively flat real agricultural prices. However, market and policy uncertainties imply a risk of resurgent volatility. The outlook for agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa is for rising food availability, which will support a declining incidence of undernourishment. The sector’s prospects could be much improved by more stable policies across the region, by strategic public and private investments, notably in infrastructure, and by suitably adapted research and extension.

Mountain partners: Applying ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR) for sustainable and resilient development planning in the Koh-E Baba mountains, Afghanistan
United Nations Environment Programme

This case study documents the experience, results and lessons of the Eco-DRR demonstration project in Afghanistan, which was implemented in three valleys of the Koh-e Baba Mountain area. The Eco-DRR project aimed to reduce harsh winter, flood and avalanche risks by promoting improved ecosystem management through a landscape approach. This approach entails bottom-up development planning, which takes into account environmental sustainability and disaster risk reduction, starting from villages and moving up to the entire landscape of the Koh-e Baba Mountains.
