World heritage and tourism in a changing climate

This report provides an overview of the increasing vulnerability of World Heritage sites to climate change impacts and the potential implications for and of global tourism. It also examines the close relationship between World Heritage and tourism, and how climate change is likely to exacerbate problems caused by unplanned tourism development and uncontrolled or poorly managed visitor access, as well as other threats and stresses.

Building a Sustainable Financial System in the European Union: The Five ‘R’ s of Market and Policy Innovation for the Green Transition

This report presents a stock-take of actions under way at the European Union level and in selected Member States to align the rules governing the financial system with environmental sustainability. Looking across the range of innovations across the EU, five broad policy priorities emerge. The central challenge of financing sustainable development in the EU is one of capital reallocation. Enhancing frameworks for risk management, clarifying the core responsibilities of financial institutions and improving reporting and disclosure across these dimensions will be necessary to fully unlock flows of sustainable finance. A growing number of Member States are delivering on individual aspects of these priorities, and others are acting within given asset classes. Food systems and natural resources

The IRP Food Systems and Natural Resources report assesses the current status and dynamics of natural resource use in food systems and their environmental impacts, identifying opportunities to move towards more resource-smart food systems. It responds to policy relevant questions like what do sustainable food systems look like from a natural resource perspective? How can resource efficiency improvements be made to enhance food security? How to steer transition towards sustainable food systems? Moreover, it looks at food as a crucial connection point (a ‘node’) where various societal issues coincide, such as human dependence on natural resources, the environment, health and wellbeing. Rather than looking separately at resources such as land, water and minerals, the IRP has chosen a systems approach. The report looks at all the resources needed for the primary production of food, as well as for other food system activities (e.g. processing, distribution) considering not only the set of activities, but also the range of actors engaged in them and the outcomes in terms of food security, livelihoods and human health.

Resource efficiency: Potential and economic implications: Summary for Policy-Makers

The assessment demonstrates that because many areas of resource use are rela vely ine cient, the poten al for resource e ciency is tremendous. This is supported by the results of the modelling undertaken for this study, which shows that resource e ciency combined with climate policy could at the same time stabilise global resource use by 2050 and boost incomes and economic growth.

On resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production – which is a standalone goal in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, but also impacts on other goals such as climate change, poverty, zero hunger, and sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth – UNEP focuses on three areas: Enabling environment – Supporting countries in creating an enabling policy environment that promotes resource efficiency, sustainable consumption and production and the transition to green economy pathways. Sectors and supply – Enhancing the ability of governments, businesses and other parties to adopt sustainable consumption and production practices in key sectors across global supply chains. Lifestyles and consumption – Enhancing the ability of countries, businesses, civil society and individual consumers to make informed choices for sustainable consumption and lifestyles.
