Financing the Transition: How Financial System Reform Can Serve Sustainable Development

This report is focused on understanding how the growing number of policy and regulatory measures taken in the financial system can support a real economy in transition, seeking to answer the question: ‘what measures are most needed to deliver efficiency, effectiveness and resilience in ways that the financial system can contribute to specific sustainability priorities in the real economy?’ To answer this question, we have examined a subset of actions in 10 countries that are focused on the three interlocking challenges
of energy, climate change and land-use.

Barriers to the Diffusion of Renewable Energy Technologies: A Case Study of the State of Maharashtra, India

The rapid economic growth in many Asian countries is significantly increasing the demand for energy. Added to this are the responses to environmental concerns (e.g., local air pollution, and global climate change), increasing interest by consumers and the government's support for the use of renewable energy technologies. At the same time, utility restructuring and privatization are leading to heightened retail competition among energy suppliers and increasing the role of consumers in energy choices. Taken together, these factors have created an opportunity for effective marketing o f the environmental benefits o f renewable energy technologies.

Gender Mainstreaming in the Management of the Marine and Coastal Ecosystems. UN Environment Regional Seas Reports and Studies No. 212

This report aims to make a small contribution to the above challenge by compiling practical cases of marine and coastal management from different regions that have integrated a gender perspective in their design, implementation and evaluation, at community, project and policy levels. The report aims to draw out practical lessons and recommendations from the case studies that can be useful for policy makers and project managers involved in integrated coastal and marine planning.

As outlined in this, first ever annual report, IETC delivered substantial results aligned with the waste management goals in the United Nations Environment Programme’s programme of work, and in particular with resolution 7 of the second session of the United Nations Environment Assembly. These have included regional waste management outlooks and global thematic reports as well as substantial work assisting countries and municipalities to improve waste management on the ground.
