Global Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Determined to Support Kigali Amendment

The Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Executive Director of UN Environment, Mr. Erik Solheim called on the refrigeration and air conditioning industry to join the fight against climate change through the full implementation of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. In his video message to the Ozone2Climate Industry Roundtable on 13 April 2017 in Shanghai, China, he said, “The Kigali Amendment shows industry the direction.

Helping Asia Pacific switch to ozone- and climate-friendly refrigerants

A UN Environment consultation for Asia-Pacific air-conditioning industry experts held in Ningbo, China has helped strengthen national capacities to switch to climate-friendly alternatives to high-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants, the use of which has to be reduced under a recent landmark global agreement.

UNEP Welcomes New National Ozone Officers of Kiribati, Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu

Bangkok, 30 June 2015 – UNEP – OzonAction in the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) has welcomed new National Ozone Officers who will help three Pacific Island nations fulfil their obligations under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The new National Ozone Officers from Kiribati, Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu have joined their National Ozone Units (NOUs) and taken on their new challenges in the first half of 2015.

Workshop on Sound Management of Used Lead Acid Batteries: Report

This is a report from a workshop on the environmentally sound management of used lead acid batteries (ULAB) held in Osaka, Japan on 26-27 November 2015. UNEP partners with governments and stakeholders to address the environmental and health risk pose by lead. Most of lead is used for batteries globally, and their unsound management and recycling are causing health and environmental
damage in many places. This small workshop was aimed at initiating the analysis of the trade, recycling and health/environmental impact of ULAB, and elaborate on possible UNEP activities to address this issue, starting with some countries in Asia. Draft analysis was presented at the workshop, and the development of regional, subregional and national strategies was proposed.
