African Civil Society Communique to the fifth AMCEN Special Session, Gaborone, Botswana

We, the representatives of African Civil Society Organizations and Networks under the auspices of Pan African Climate Justice Alliance met in Gaborone, Botswana, on October 12-14, 2013 for the Pre-AMCENN African Civil Society Consultative Workshop, ahead of the 5th Special Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN). The Workshop also served as the UNEP Regional Consultative Meeting with Major Groups and Stakeholders in the Africa Region (RCM) in preparation for the first United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and the 15th Session of the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF) scheduled to take place in 2014.

Asia-Pacific Major Groups and Stakeholders Regional Consultation Meeting Phnom Penh, Cambodia 17 – 18 September 2013

84 participants from 23 countries in Asia and the Pacific attended the Asia-Pacific Major Groups and Stakeholders Regional Consultation Meeting organized by UNEP, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Satagoeri Project and Ecomom Korea and hosted by the Cooperation Committee for Cambodia. The meeting was held at the Imperial Garden & Villa Hotel, from 17-18 September 2013. The participants endorsed the following recommendations as necessary steps towards achieving environmental sustainability.

Decision 1/16 – Legal and Technical Assistance

The Conference: 1. Calls upon the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions to officially inform Parties, through the Secretariat of the Bamako Convention about its short and long term planned actions within the Africa Region. 2. Requests the Secretariat of the Bamako Convention, in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions to develop technical guidelines for all aspects of hazardous wastes management.
